The Short Answer
PTFE balls last indefinitely in storage. What you are protecting against is contamination and surface damage, not degradation. Unlike nylon, which absorbs moisture, or elastomers, which oxidise and harden, PTFE simply sits there unchanged.
Why PTFE Stores So Well
- No moisture uptake. Under 0.01% water absorption. No swelling, no dimensional drift, no pre-use conditioning.
- No oxidation. The carbon-fluorine bond does not react with atmospheric oxygen.
- No plasticiser migration. There are no plasticisers to migrate, so PTFE does not harden or shrink with age.
- UV stable. Not a concern in normal indoor storage.
A PTFE ball stored properly for a decade is the same part it was on day one. Most polymer components cannot make that claim.
The Real Risk: Embedded Particles
PTFE is soft — Shore D 50–65. Grit, swarf, sand and metal filings press into the surface under quite modest contact force and stay there. Once embedded, they are effectively permanent, and they do two things in service: they score the valve seat, and they release into the product stream.
This is the single most important handling consideration, and it is why a bag of balls left open on a workshop bench is a genuine problem rather than a tidiness issue.
Practical Storage
- Sealed containers. The original polybag or a lidded box. Not an open tray or bin.
- Segregate by size and grade. A 12 mm virgin ball and a 12 mm glass-filled ball are visually near-identical and functionally different. Mixed stock leads to the wrong grade going into a regulated application.
- Label with grade, not just size. "12 mm PTFE" is not enough information to reissue from stores safely.
- Keep away from machining areas. Airborne swarf and grinding dust are exactly the contamination you are avoiding.
- Normal indoor temperature. No special conditions needed. Avoid storing next to heat sources — not because of degradation, but because PTFE expands significantly and a warm ball measured for incoming inspection reads oversize.
Handling Before Installation
- Clean hands or gloves. PTFE is non-stick, so surface oils wipe off easily — but grit on a hand transfers straight into the surface.
- Do not drop onto hard floors. Not because it breaks, but because it picks up whatever is on the floor.
- Do not mark balls with steel scribes or stamps. The mark is permanent and creates a leak path if it lands on the sealing band.
- Inspect before fitting. Look for embedded particles, flats and visible damage. Ten seconds here saves a valve strip-down later.
- Let them equalise before measuring. A ball from a cold van will read undersize.
Cleaning
PTFE tolerates essentially any cleaning agent — solvents, detergents, acids, alkalis — so cleaning method is unconstrained. Use a lint-free wipe and a suitable solvent, and avoid abrasive pads, which score the surface. For food or pharmaceutical service, follow your site's validated cleaning procedure; PTFE will not object to any of it.
