Can PTFE Balls Be Used in Drinking Water Systems?

Yes for virgin PTFE — with one important caveat about filled grades that catches people out.

In short: Virgin PTFE is chemically inert, non-leaching and widely used in potable water dosing and treatment systems. Filled PTFE grades are a different matter: glass, carbon and especially bronze fillers can shed into the water stream, and bronze-filled PTFE should never be used in drinking water service. Always specify virgin explicitly and request a material declaration.

The Short Answer

Virgin PTFE is suitable for potable water service. Filled PTFE grades generally are not, and bronze-filled PTFE definitively is not. The distinction is not a technicality — it is the single most common specification error we see in water treatment enquiries.

Why Virgin PTFE Is Acceptable

PTFE's carbon-fluorine backbone is chemically inert and does not react with water, chlorine, hypochlorite, or the acids and alkalis used in treatment dosing. It absorbs under 0.01% water, so it does not swell, soften or take up contaminants. It is non-nutritive, meaning it does not support biological growth on its surface the way some polymers do. And it is non-leaching — there is nothing in virgin PTFE that migrates into the water.

That combination is why PTFE check balls are standard in chlorine dosing pumps, acid and alkali pH correction skids, and treatment plant metering equipment.

Why Filled Grades Are Different

A filled PTFE ball is PTFE plus something else — glass fibre, carbon or bronze powder. The PTFE matrix is still inert. The filler is not necessarily.

  • Bronze-filled: never use in potable water. Bronze contains copper and tin, and it corrodes. Both the corrosion products and the shed particles are unacceptable in drinking water.
  • Glass-filled: avoid. Glass fibres can be released as the surface wears, and glass is attacked by strong caustic which is present in some treatment chemistry.
  • Carbon-filled: avoid. Carbon particles shed as the surface abrades.

The trap here is that filled grades last longer mechanically. A maintenance engineer trying to extend replacement intervals on a chlorine dosing pump may reasonably upgrade to glass-filled without realising the application has a purity constraint. Specify virgin explicitly on the drawing and the purchase order, not just verbally.

What Documentation to Ask For

At minimum, request a material declaration confirming virgin PTFE resin with no fillers or reprocessed material. Where the project or client requires it, ask specifically about:

  • FDA-compliant resin for food-contact grade
  • Any national or regional potable water approval your project mandates

A note on honesty here: a resin-level declaration and a finished-part certification are not the same thing, and suppliers sometimes let buyers conflate them. Ask which one you are being given. We will tell you plainly what we can and cannot certify rather than issue a document that will not survive your client's audit.

The Reprocessed Material Risk

Unusually cheap "PTFE" balls are often molded from reprocessed or reground material. For potable water this is a genuine problem, because the provenance of that regrind is unknown — it may have come from parts used in entirely unrelated chemical service. If you are specifying for drinking water, ask the supplier directly whether the resin is virgin, and treat evasion as an answer.

Practical Guidance

  1. Specify virgin PTFE, in writing, on the drawing and the order.
  2. Request a material declaration with the consignment.
  3. Accept that virgin will wear faster than a filled grade, and plan replacement intervals accordingly rather than upgrading the material.
  4. If mechanical life is genuinely unworkable, look at seat condition and ball sizing before changing material — those are usually the real constraint.

Does PTFE leach PFAS into water?

Finished, fully sintered PTFE is a stable high-molecular-weight polymer and is not itself a PFAS that migrates into water under normal service conditions. Concerns in this area generally relate to processing aids used in manufacture and to thermal decomposition above ~300°C. If your project has a specific PFAS requirement, state it at the enquiry stage so it can be addressed directly rather than assumed.

Can I use PTFE balls in hot water systems?

Yes. PTFE handles hot water and steam comfortably within its 260°C limit, and unlike some polymers it does not soften, hydrolyse or absorb water at temperature.
